Using a Treadmill to Train for Hiking

Are you planning to train for a long or intensive hike? One way that you can train for such an occasion is with a treadmill. There are many different exercises that can help you get your body and mind right for a long hike. Don’t forget to make the workout fun. This is important. Working out is often boring. Also, make sure to find a way to challenge yourself throughout your training. Here are some tips on how to utilize a treadmill to train for hiking.

Endurance

One of your focuses on the treadmill should be to increase your endurance. This means you should be focusing on extending the amount of time that you can be on the treadmill for. This should be centered around the idea of a slower pace, but longer time periods.

Incline

It is likely that your hikes will have some sort of incline to them. Training on your treadmill with an incline setting will help to train more muscles in your legs. You will become used to walking up trails that are sloped upwards. This is an important step to take when training for a hike on a treadmill.

Other Treadmill Tips

If you are newer to training on a treadmill, it is recommended to start slowly. You want to gain an understanding of how the machine works before you attempt to train faster and harder. Always wear the safety key. This will turn off the machine in the event of a fall. Another tip is to avoid holding on to the handles of the treadmill. This will decrease your heart rate and will make for a workout that isn’t truly great. If you find yourself gripping at the sides, turn down the speed. This will help you maintain your heart rate and a good workout.
